On the Road with Mike D
“On the road with Mike” – Delaware Autism Event
Whenever I get the chance to fish for a great cause, I jump at the occasion. Such was the case recently when I heard the Texas Roadhouse in Camden, DE was involved with the Go Fish Tournament to support Delaware Autism. I had several days open in my schedule so I thought it would be cool to go on up and make some store visits, fish the event, and also have a great give away for a lucky guest to fish the event with me.
I arrived in Delaware several days before the event and made appearances starting off in Seaford and then off to Bear and Camden. I have to say for a small state they have a lot of fishing fans. I am always happy to see the amount of kids that show up for these appearances especially when they bring me fish pictures to look at. At my first stop in Seaford, I got to meet Tom Gray who won the contest to fish with me and boy was he excited! I chatted with Tom about the fishing at Coursey’s pond (the lake we were fishing) as well as stories about other lakes in the area. I was excited that Tom was a fisherman and I had a good partner for the event.

Next it was off to Bear, DE for a visit. I had a fantastic time there as well, and I especially liked the decorations Abigail at the Bear store put together. I met a real nice family there whose son is enamored with bass fishing. They actually stayed the entire time of my visit and he had a ton of questions for me. I found out his fishing rod had recently been stolen and he really wanted to win the prize pack I was giving away that night. Although they did not win, I managed to find his mom’s entry form and sent him out a new fishing rod and reel anyway. I hope he catches a big one on it!
In keeping up with the theme, my Camden appearance was jammed packed. I actually got to meet a bunch of the other anglers in the contest. We talked a bit about how the fishing was during the week (you know there’s no way I wouldn’t wet a line while in town!). I was really impressed with the amount of quality bass in Delaware, during the week I had a couple of fish over the 5 pound mark – I’ll take that anytime!

Saturday morning I met Tom at the lake and we launched my boat, got our gear ready and headed down the lake to start fishing. It was the first day the sun had come out in 4 days and in such a shallow lake that usually spells trouble. The fishing usually gets pretty tough when you get weather changes that abrupt. Although it was quite different than what I experienced during the week, Tom managed to catch more than I did! We both made the most of it and had a great time. Proceeds from the event went to Delaware Autism and they had a great celebration after the tournament. Amanda was there from the Camden store in Legendary fashion and I enjoyed meeting all the participants and hearing all the stories.
I look forward to heading back up next year and let’s hope the weather cooperates!
See you on the water!
