The Ultimate Craft to Keep Dinner Phone-Free

Sometimes, it feels like technology defines our lives when we're on our phones at all hours of the day, in front of computers at work and school, and glued to the TV at night. When you're looking for an excuse to put all phones aside and enjoy the company of loved ones, dinner is the perfect opportunity.

With a phone drop-off basket, you can enjoy craft time with your family and guarantee that no dinner will be interrupted by a phone call again.

Phone Drop-Off Basket

A one-stop destination for every device, a drop-off basket will give everyone a place to store their cell phones while enjoying dinner as a family. You will need:

  • A partitioned or sectioned basket, preferably with one section for each family member
  • Fabric ribbon
  • Stick-on letters
  • 8 1/2 by 11 inch frame
  • Printer or construction paper
  • Crayons or colored markers

1. Choose a sectioned or partitioned basket or bin. If nearby shops do not have appropriate baskets, any medium sized basket will also suffice. If desired, cardboard or poster board can be used to create homemade dividers.

2. Using stick-on letters, place each person's name around the basket rim to denote whose phone will go where. If your basket has no partitions, feel free to spell your family name instead.

3. Continue to decorate the basket, tying ribbon around the middle or handle, or lacing it through the basket weave. Feel free to use any other crafting tools for decoration if available as well, like puff paint, sequins, and glitter.

5. Using the paper and marker or crayon, create a "Cell Phone Drop-Off Basket" sign to accompany your basket. Your sign can be as basic or fancy as you like, and can include other details, like rules for usage. When completed, place the sign inside the frame.

4. Choose a permanent tabletop or shelf for your basket, preferably away from the table so that notifications and alerts aren't visible or audible. Once you have selected the perfect spot, position your framed sign and basket, and enjoy a quiet, phone-free family dinner!
