Giving Back This Holiday Season – Service with Heart

Increasingly, families are realizing they don't need a pile of presents under the tree. They believe one, well-chosen gift is plenty to create that perfect Christmas experience.

Opting for minimalist holiday gifting, however, doesn't mean you have to cut down on your giving. Rather, it can give your family the opportunity to give back to the community.

Here are a few ways to give back:

  1. Random acts of kindness.

Acts of kindness need little planning and can brighten a person's day! Consider paying the tab for someone sitting near you.

  2. Sponsor a family.

Community organizations frequently sponsor families that meet their need criteria. Families like yours can volunteer to provide all the trimming of a bountiful holiday, such as food, toys, decorations and gifts.

  3. Answer letters to Santa.

Kids write letters to Santa with their gift list. Frequently, these letters are heart-wrenching, asking for things like food or a secure place to live. Most post offices keep these letters and will share them with neighbors looking to "give back" during the holiday season.

  4. Participate in a charity program.

Churches and local organizations are good sources of holiday charity programs. Many give food, toys and other gifts to the needy in the community. Participating in a local program is a good way to give in the spirt of giving back without spending a huge amount of money.

  5. Donate to a shelter or food pantry.

Virtually all communities have public and private programs to help those families that need help with food and temporary shelter. A gift of money, food or clothing can help those that might have to go without this season. Call to see what the shelter's greatest needs are.

Giving back during the holiday season is a good way to focus your family's efforts on giving rather than "getting." It's easy to find a worthy way to give back when you know where to look.
